Patience Montgomery works in a women’s shelter, and she takes into her home any animal that needs her. This time she thinks she rescued a human, Malcolm Wallace, finding him drunk in a ditch. She just wants him to sleep it off and then leave. Malcolm is a Guardian in the shifter world. His intended mate chose someone else, and his twin brother found his own mate. So now Malcolm is lonely. To distract himself, he takes some time from his work as a Guardian and decides to look for his sister, Camille, who disappeared many years ago. But he had way too much to drink and has been enjoying the woman who rescued him. But Patience has shifters for neighbors and has helped so many other shifters. So she was able to figure out what Malcolm is. Because she is a human and knows by their laws that she is not supposed to know about their kind, she needs to get him gone. But something she said tipped him off that she knew he was a shifter, and worse yet, he is a Guardian and will have to report her. When he does, her mind will need to be wiped of all memory of his kind. He decides to stick around and investigate further before he reports her. As they do the chores together and eat meals together, both of them feel comfortable. She knows already that she will miss him terribly when he leaves. But eventually, the secrets start to come out, not through Patience but one of the shifters. Malcolm is trying to do what’s right and keep it all from blowing up and hurting everyone. Can they work with the Synod? Is there any way to protect everyone? And is there any hope that Malcolm and Patience can be together? Or will Malcolm eventually have to leave her behind? Wow, this is the most intense shifter book I’ve ever read! It was so good! The story line was amazing, the characters were so vivid and real, and my emotions were all tangled up with them! If you read no other book, read this one. It will stay with you long after you finish reading!

This was like a whole new world. I love shifter romances and this one had some different elements than others I've read and it works so well. Patience and Malcolm are destined to be together, but not in the fated mates aspect these stories usually go. I loved them! They come from different worlds but bring out the best in each other. The story has some suspense and danger and their chemistry is just super explosive!
