About this ebook

International bestselling author Mark Lawrence continues the bold new world of dark fantasy he created in the Broken Empire trilogy with the first book of the Red Queen's War...

For all her reign the Red Queen has fought the long war, contested in secret, against the powers that stand behind nations, for higher stakes than land or gold. Her greatest weapon is The Silent Sister—unseen by most and unspoken of by all.

The Red Queen’s grandson, Prince Jalan Kendeth—drinker, gambler, seducer of women—is one who can see The Silent Sister. Content with his role as a minor royal, Jal pretends that the hideous crone is not there. But war with the undead is coming, and the Red Queen has called on her family to defend the realm. Jal thinks that nothing that will affect him. He's wrong...

After escaping a death trap set by the Silent Sister, Jal finds his fate magically intertwined with a fierce Norse warrior. As the two undertake a journey to undo the spell, encountering grave dangers, willing women, and an upstart prince named Jorg Ancrath along the way, Jalan gradually catches a glimmer of the truth: he and the Norseman are but pieces in a game—and the Red Queen controls the board.

The story has great worldbuilding and writing and I enjoyed it but I cant stand the MC even in the next book he goes through something that you think would mature or harden him up a little then nope he gets even worse every other character has deep personalities and traits but the Jals only lasting trait is that hes a coward and idiot. its just that the mc doesnt grow I get into it then get totally thrown off.. i recommend reading it just I wanted to quit reading it many times due to Jal.

Utterly disappointing. If the point was to build a book around a callow, irritating, and flippant main character, then that was achieved.Unfortunately that describes the entire book. Would have been worth three stars if edited down to half the length. The pacing of the actual writing begins to grate after the first few chapters; set up, set up, cliched punch line. Repeat. The plot is plodding and predictable.I finished this book in anger, paging ahead , reading a sentence or two, sadly picking the story up half a chapter later with no problem. This author brought us the Prince of Thorns? I will regrettably not be following this series any further..... Okay, it's a year later and I read it again, and this time I loved it? I found it funny and charming and I have no idea why it rubbed me the wrong way initially. I must not really have read it, because I didn't remeber most of it so this second reading was like a first. Strange.

I would highly recommend reading the Broken Empire Trilogy prior to this one. There is certainly a lot going on that I think you may be lost on if you don't. That being said, I absolutely loved the Broken Empire's characters and story. This one took me a bit to latch on to, but it's an interesting read filled with magic, mayhem and undead. I've come to expect unique characters from Mark Lawrence and Jalan is another prime example of one.
