About this ebook

In "Building a Practical Backyard Cob Hut," author Matthew Steven tells the story of his ultimate summertime back yard project: Hand sculpting a useful building out of the very mud it stands on.
Cob is a type of masonry that is typically hand sculpted out of mixed mud, sand and straw. Cob buildings are massive structures built for quiet and comfort. Cob construction offers an unusually fun opportunity to novice and expert builders alike to express their artistic side while creating useful structures of lasting beauty.

Filled with color photographs following the entire construction process and packed with practical knowledge, this book eschews the mystical aspects of primitive building and focuses on a simple step by step process from planning to finishing a cob structure.

You will feel more confident about starting your own cob project after reading "Building a Practical Backyard Cob Hut."

Included with your purchase of the book is access to the book web site and Facebook group, where you can get your questions answered.

In Matt's book I was able to quickly access each subject I was looking for. This allowed me to more readily absorb each stage of building with cob and informed me on a few lines of thought I probably wouldn't have taken the time to figure out like zoning laws or proportions of mixture and how each would effect a building project. The further I got in this, the more questions and ideas came up for my own region in the center of the U.S. for building with cob and what pitfalls I might encounter as I select my site or build one for someone else and talk them through their selection process. In most other how-to or informative step-by-step books I've read I lost interest a few pages in. The involved nature of Cobb, making it, selection of materials and putting the entire project together looks like it would be more fun than work to me.

Simple and to the point, this book provides an excellent view into the author's personal experience with the process of building his structure that should be of use to anyone wanting to get started on their own.
