Im Vordergrund von Vilfredo Paretos (1848-1923) Soziologie steht das Problem des nicht-logischen Handelns. Darunter fallen all jene Verhaltensformen, die sich nicht mit dem Rationalitätstypus des zweckgemäßen Handelns, wie es für die Wirtschaft, die Wissenschaften und die Technik grundlegend ist, zur Deckung bringen lassen. Soziales Handeln ist überwiegend nicht-logisches Handeln, das häufig nachträglich mit einem Glanzlack der Logik und Vernunft überzogen wird. Pareto legte damit den Grundstein für eine moderne Soziologie der Emotionen und der politischen Rhetorik.
