A versão senequiana da história de Medeia, filha de Eetes, rei da Cólquida, e da sua tormentosa paixão pelo argonauta Jasão é o exemplo de um novo gosto literário, quase barroco e impressionista, onde visualização e exploração do macabro e da violência se cruzam com uma forte atração pela magia e pela feitiçaria. Medeia, neta do Sol, sobrinha da feiticeira Circe e, segundo algumas lendas, filha de Hécate, detentora das artes de magia, é uma figura portentosa e paradigmática, capaz de usar todos os seus dotes sobre-humanos ao arrepio da natureza e da humanidade.
Seneca’s version of the story of Medea, daughter of King Aeetes of Colchis, and her tumultuous passion for the argonaut Jason is an example of a new literary taste that is almost Baroque and impressionistic, where the visualization and exploration of the macabre and violent meets a strong attraction for magic and witchcraft. Medea, granddaughter of the Sun, niece of the sorceress Circe and, according to some legends, daughter of the witch Hecate, is a portentous and paradigmatic figure able to use all her superhuman gifts against nature and humanity.
