Enter the world of By Blood where an entire class of vampires operates within the glittering realm of the victorian ton.

A man with a secret.

Nicodemus Blackburn has seen the best and worst of mankind. Five hundred years of dealing with them teaches the vampire to be very wary of the creatures. Unfortunately, alarming events leave him no choice but to enter the world of the ton to hunt a rogue vampire—one who is making his own army of blood thirsty vampires. Searching for the villain is not the worst of his troubles. That can be laid at the feet of bluestocking Lady Cordelia Collingsworth.

A woman on a mission.

Cordelia has always been an outcast, even in her own family. She has forged her way in the world with her ability to write, and Nico Blackburn is the focus of her next article. Before she can obtain any information about the mysterious man, she is pulled headlong into a scandal that leaves her with no choice but to marry Nico—a man with dangerous secrets.

A passion that consumes them both.

Thrust into a world she knows nothing of, Cordelia finds herself falling in love with a man who claims to be a vampire. As their passion grows, so does the danger around them and Nico will have to call on all of his powers to protect the one thing he has realized he cannot live without: his opinionated, infuriating, and thoroughly delectable wife.

Nicodemus is HAWTness! Not all authors can mix Paranormal and Victorian romance, but Melissa Schroeder does just that and makes you want more! Nicodemus "Nico" Blackburn is out to protect the vampire world from all that can go wrong and the humans that don't suspect that they exist. And within this world, he is still trying to decide if love is in his cards. He is known to be one of the most eligible bachelors and this keeps people wondering about him. Lady Cordelia Collingsworth is not what they considered normal and prestigeous. She was born into circumstances that kept her from being fully accepted. But this only made her fight harder for a life that was her own. So when she runs into Nico, she is determined to find out his REAL story. Unfortunately, looking for this story started a series of events that both Nico and Cordelia weren't prepared for. Nico & Cordelia have a lot to learn about each other and they don't have that much time to do it before they are forced to live by societies rules. This story draws you in... Whether you are a fan of paranormal creatures/vampires or maybe historical/Victorian era or just all things romance, you will be drawn into the world that has been created and the twists & turns that the characters are often forced to take. There are supporting characters that you want to know more about and you will definitely keep wanting to know more about who keeps causing so much trouble. I can't wait to see what more comes from this series! Nicodemus Blackburn will be a hard one to top!

Whether you are into the vampire paranormal romance genre or not, you will want to read this book! Vampires are generally not one of my favorites, but once I started this I could not put it down. You will adore Lady Cordelia. She’s a strong minded and strong-willed young woman who believes in speaking her mind. After being virtually abandoned by her family, she supports herself by making her way through the ton of London reporting on their activities and indiscretions for a local gossip newspaper. Her current assignment is to find out what Nicodemus Blackburn is up to. You will fall in love with Nico Blackburn. He has a commanding presence & is unaccountably drawn to Cordelia. Although not a member of the ton, he seems to carry a great deal of influence, which is what first sparked Cordelia’s interest as a reporter. Little does she know she’s about to get more than she bargained for but just what she needs. There’s a compromised reputation to save, secrets to reveal, made vamps to overcome, family history to uncover, a threat to their lives from the grave, and the ultimate question, to bond or not to bond. This story has drama, intrigue, suspense, a touch of humor, romance vampire style, and plenty of hot, steamy passion. Oh, I forgot to mention, you may shed a tear or two. This is a definite must read! I can’t wait to read Malik and Diana’s story next!!

Don't think. Just enjoy! What this book is not - historically accurate. Do we care? In this case, absolutely NOT. This is the period vampire suspense story you never knew you wanted. And in true Ms Schroeder style, does not skimp on the heat. Nico is so intense it should come with a cold drink/air-conditioning warning. And Cordelia is a FANTASTIC independent female character. You can see this story was setting up for a series, but I suspect it may not have gotten father than the second book. Which is really a shame. I was interested to see where Grey's story was going to go in particularly. But who knows! Maybe one day! :D Regardless, you'll enjoy this one. It does wrap up in a bit of an unexpected hurry at the end, and it's for this and the historical looseness that I figured 4 starts might be about right. But I don't question at all those who rated it 5. Just a note too - my version of the book seemed to have a duplication of the start to the book at the end. The upshot being, it'll seem like you have more book left than you really do. That was disappointing for me because I was enjoying getting right into the world being created. But eh! Not a deal breaker. Just a heads up.

About the author

From an early age, USA Today Bestselling author Melissa loved to read. First, it was the books her mother read to her including her two favorites, Winnie the Pooh and the Beatrix Potter books. She cut her preteen teeth on Trixie Belden and read and reviewed To Kill a Mockingbird in middle school. It wasn’t until she was in college that she tried to write her first stories, which were full of angst and pain, and really not that fun to read or write. After trying several different genres, she found romance in a Linda Howard book.

Since her first published book, Grace Under Pressure, Mel has had over 60 short stories, novellas, and novels published. She has written in genres ranging from historical to contemporary to futuristic and has worked with 8 publishers although she handles most of her publishing herself. She is best known for her Harmless and Santini series.

After years of following her military husband around the country and world, Mel happily lives with her family in horse and wine country in Northern Virginia.
