About this ebook

The true story of the most famous SAS operation in history.

'Bravo Two Zero' was the code-name of the famous SAS operation: a classic story of bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. BRAVO TWO ZERO by patrol commander 'Andy McNab' became an international bestseller, as did the book by 'Chris Ryan' (THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY). Both men became millionaires. Three members of the patrol were killed. One, veteran sergeant Vince Phillips, was blamed in both books for a succession of mistakes.

As Michael Asher reveals, the stories in BRAVO TWO ZERO and THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY grew considerably in the telling. Their heroic tales of taking out tanks with their rocket launchers, mowing down hundreds of Iraqi soldiers, the silent stabbing of the occasional sentry, were never mentioned at their post-war debriefings... In an investigation literally in the footsteps of the patrol, Michael Asher tells the true story.

I've read all the books concerning Bravo Two Zero and I have problems with all except 'Soldier Five' by Mike Coburn. However - onto 'The Real Bravo Two Zero ' Michael Asher seems to believe that the Bedouin never lie, so all his research and accounts seem to be based on this questionable assumption? And so, the reader of this nevertheless interesting book needs to bear this in mind throughout!! One example being; when the Bedouin family living next to the Wadi which was the LUP for Bravo Two Zero says that there was no fire fight between the SAS and the Iraqi forces, Asher believes them and so poo hoos accounts mentioned in all the other books. My view is that this family were warned in a no uncertain fashion to keep their mouths shut regarding this fire fight as were any others Iraqis Asher was to interview concerning other conflicts. ( Fear of a loss of face ? ) Despite Ash's obvious bias he deals sensitively and honourably to the tragic death of PS Vince Phillips, the only soldier from this patrol who was never awarded a medal? This book is extremely interesting and informative providing yet another angle on what will always be somewhat of a mystery. Well worth a read. Geoff Ringham.

Great to read a different perspective on what was a serious and dangerous mission behind enemy lines without the sensational fictionalising that gets in the way of other's accounts.
