THE INSTANT #1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

'A pitch-perfect espionage thriller' Sunday Times

'The foremost living spy novelist in the English language' New Statesman

****

In MI5 a scandal is brewing and there are bad actors everywhere.

A key member of a Downing Street think-tank has disappeared without a trace.

Claude Whelan, one-time First Desk of MI5's Regent's Park, is tasked with tracking her down. But the trail leads straight back to Regent's Park HQ itself, with its chief, Diana Taverner, as prime suspect. Meanwhile her Russian counterpart has unexpectedly shown up in London but has slipped under MI5's radar.

Over at Slough House, the home for demoted and embittered spies, the slow horses are doing what they do best: adding a little bit of chaos to an already unstable situation.

In a world where lying, cheating and backstabbing is the norm, bad actors are bending the rules for their own gain. If the slow horses want to change the script, they'll need to get their own act together before the final curtain.

*Includes the short story Standing by the Wall: A Slough House Interlude*

Rather than his usual misdirection (of which I have complained in previous books) Mick herron instead tells this story in flashbacks and real time, without giving the reader clues as to which is which. I loved this, a combination of Slough House ineptness/bad luck and Jackson Lamb's insights keep this story gripping to the end.

I cannot recommend this book. The effort to invent unusual phrases becomes boring when you realise the only purpose is to be cute. The lack of any notice at all when the scene, location and characters suddenly change is extremely annoying; its purpose escapes me. The plot and devolution are good, but not good enough to overcome these annoying deficiencies.

A high standard maintained - rivetting and quirky as always and satisfying misdirections keep one's attention. A wise man may see an oft repeated (minor) mistake as a trap set for the pedant worthy of Lamb himself but even in an imagined world there is no such thing as a Ford Kia. One or other but not both. There was a Ford Ka......Pedant it is then....
