Dash takes the reader back to a forgotten time in New York's past. This book is essential reading for anyone wanting a window into life in the city of New York at the end of the 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th Century.

Mike Dash is the author of five previous books, including the bestsellers Tulipomania and Batavia's Graveyard and the recent Thug, also published by Granta.A Cambridge educated historian, he lives in London.
