About this ebook

Preparation, Processing and Properties of Biopolymers and Biocomposites is one of a two-volume set of titles that provides comprehensive information on the latest advances in this important research field. The first volume focuses on the preparation, processing, and properties of these materials and the second on their diverse range of applications. In this volume the fundamental principles of processing biopolymers and creating their associated biocomposites are covered in detail. It covers topics such as extraction and purification of biopolymers from natural sources, synthesis of biopolymers through fermentation and bioengineering, and the incorporation of fillers and reinforcements to create biocomposites with unique tailored properties. The volume also explores the characterization techniques used to assess the physical, mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties of these materials. By providing insights into their processing techniques and structure-property relationships, the volume will equip the reader with the knowledge needed to design and engineer these materials for a specific range of applications.• An up-to-date information resource on the preparation, processing, and properties of biopolymers and their associated biocomposites• Covers synthesis, characterization, and modelling• Addresses the circular bioeconomy, technology advancements in microalgae and sustainability

About the author

Dr. Mohammad Jawaid is currently affiliated with the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at United Arab Emirates University. Previously he was a senior fellow (professor) in the Laboratory of Biocomposites Technology at the Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest Products (INTROP), Universiti Putra Malaysia. He is an eminent scientist with more than twenty years of teaching, and research experience in composite materials. His research interests include hybrid reinforced/filled polymer composites, and advanced materials such as graphene/ nanoclay/fire retardant, lignocellulosic reinforced/filled polymer composites, and the modification and treatment of lignocellulosic fibres and solid wood, and nanocomposites and nanocellulose fibres.

Dr. Ramzi Khiari is a senior lecturer in the Department of Textile Engineering at the Higher Institute of Technological Studies in Ksar-Hellal (Monastir, Tunisia). He graduated with a master’s degree in Textile Engineering from the National Engineering School of Monastir, in 2007 and then went on to complete his Ph.D. in 2010 from the University of Monastir and Grenoble INP in France. In 2017, he was awarded the diploma of "Habilitation Universitaire" from the University of Monastir, and then in 2020 he received the diploma "Habilitation à diriger des Recherches" from Grenoble INP. His research interests focus on the valorization of biomass at multi-scale levels, namely: fibers, nanocellulose, lignin, hemicelluloses, and their use as potential raw materials in several industrial applications (Textile, papermaking, polymeric materials, composites, and nanocomposites).

Abu-Jdayil Basim has completed his PhD in 1996 from Erlangen-Nurnberg University, Germany. He is currently Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Chemical & Petroleum Engineering Department, at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). His research specialization is in the areas of rheology and composite materials. His research has resulted in the publication of several journal papers, and presentations at local and international conferences. Dr. Abu-Jdayil has worked as a consultant for different companies in the Middle East, and he has conducted many short courses in the training centers of SABIC, GASCO, Emirates Steel Industries, and EMARAT.
