Just before Christmas, a woman claiming to be a queen, orders Valencia to create a love potion or else she will turn Valencia’s family into toads. She needs to pick up a grimoire, then she travels to the queen’s castle to make the potion. But when she has the grimoire, a group of giant frogs appear, led by a huge blue toad. And there is something familiar about that blue one! Amius, the son of the Elf king and queen, had been imprisoned by the sorceress Lilith and his power was bound by the brand she put on his chest. But his nightly dreams of a captivating woman gave him a sense of freedom. Lilith was obsessed with him, and when he would not love her, in a rage, she turned him into the King of the Toads. Valencia meanwhile started on her trip to the woods, looking for the grimoire. A cronko, bird-like creature with red eyes, was to be her guide and alert her when she got near the grimoire. As she rested the first evening, a sparkling dust fell on her and a voice said not to be afraid. The goddess Cyriana had been told to release Valencia’s powers and the glyphs on her wrists and hands began to burn and glow. Cyriana explained that Valencia was a descendant of the Fey king and queen, the rightful heiress to the throne, and only she can restore the Fey kingdom to its greatness. Figuring she was dreaming, she laughed at the impossibility. The cronko angrily flew at her, but the glyphs on her hand glowed again and the bird raced away as quickly as it could. A voice told her to follow the stars and she found a huge mushroom with a door. Inside an old man gave her the grimoire and disappeared. Outside again, the cronko was also gone but she heard rustling and huge frogs appeared, led by a blue toad – the one from her dreams! They were there to escort her to the castle. But when she heard the blue toads thoughts, she was confused. Valencia is still trying to figure out what is going on as she reads the grimoire to find the ingredients. But when she slept, her dreams kept trying to tell her something as her prince stood before her and the blue toad with the same color eyes stood behind him. Will she figure out the mystery in time? This was really a good story line that kept my full attention. I enjoyed the descriptions that let the reader see the world the characters moved in. Everything was made vividly real, both in sight and sound. This kind of immersive story is fantastic and I highly recommend giving this book your attention!
