Reminiscent of Frankenstein and tales by the Brothers Grimm, this debut novel stands out as a compelling, original story that has the feel of a classic.

The city of Bryre suffers under the magic of an evil wizard. Because of his curse, girls sicken and disappear without a trace, and all live in fear. No one is allowed outside after dark. Night is when Kymera comes to the city, with a cloak disguising her wings, the bolts in her neck, and her spiky tail. Her mission is to rescue the girls of Bryre. Despite Kym's caution in going secretively, a boy named Ren sees and befriends her . . . but what he knows will change her world forever.

Monstrous offers predictable plot concerning young girl, named Kymera, miraculously brought back to life. Given claws, wings and tail takes on a task nobody else could carry on. The task takes half of the book. However satisfying, you cannot shake of impression of utmost naiveness presented both by girl and author. The main character struggles to come to conclusions which for reader are more than intrusive. Other characters seems too simple almost like they serve some purpose for the plot. Author could not avoid deus ex machina tricks to push story forward. Next awaits for you a way to redemption for Kymera. Part I find quite interesting. Unfortunately, in perspective plot is rather childish; not in contents but form. I believe my expectations were different from the goal author concerned. Horror and mystery themes are tamed and story simplified in order to appeal to young audience. Extensive romance thread intertwined with action and mystery must be the method to please the target. I come to conclusion Monstrous is light novel designated for young adolescence. I find it satisfying and interesting, however, with missed opportunities to make the story more relevant.
