âIâve never heard of Mr. Conjure,â Mary said.
âHe creeps through the shadows wearing a raggedy top hat and a long black coat. His claws are stained a bright red from all the blood heâs spilled. If he gets you, thereâs no escape.â
âWhyâs he called Mr. Conjure?â Mary asked.
âWhat do you mean?â
âWhy isnât he called Top Hat or Mr. Red Hands?â
Eddie frowned. âBecause heâs called Mr. Conjure.âÂ
âBut what does he conjure?â Mary asked.
âHe doesnât. You conjure him.â
âBut why would anyone want to?â
âBecause people are sometimes stupid,â Rachel said.
Jenny is a little stupid, at least thatâs what Mary thinks. Why else would the teen go to an abandoned house by herself and play a game to summon a monster called Mr. Conjure? Mary doesnât believe he exists, but Jenny insists that heâs out to get her. Sheâs so afraid of him that she attempts suicide.Â
Rachel wants to help Jenny and needs Mary to do it. Mary thinks Jenny needs a shrink, not her. Sheâs sure Mr. Conjure isnât real. But something is lurking in the dark, and if it canât get Jenny, itâll take Mary instead.Â
