Penang is an important centre for multicultural pantun (poems). This book is an anthology of outstanding oral and written couplets.
It covers a broad range – from children’s poetry to that of young adults, from love to ceremony. The written pantun are extracted from a variety of popular books from the 1920s until the 1950s and up to the 2000s, including Pantun 481, Pantun Zaman Sari, Pantun Anti Kahwin Paksa, and the Peranakan treasures of Pantun Hiboran and Pantun Penghiburan Hati. Some have been taken from the Malay theatres of boria and bangsawan as well as the songs of Zaharah Agus. They contain themes that have withstood time, marking the emancipation of women, numerous matters of the heart, yearning, marriage, entertainment, historical events, and so on.
