About this eBook

While in rehab, James Frey finds a father figure in a shady mafia boss called Leonard. When Leonard returns to his dubious, prosperous life in the criminal underworld of Las Vegas, he promises James his support on the outside.

Tragedy strikes the day James is released and his world seems set to implode. Unsure where to turn, he calls Leonard. Paradoxically, it is in Leonard's lawless underworld that James discovers the courage and humanity needed to rebuild his life.

There were moments when I felt like this book came close to transcending its own wallowing awfulness to become an ingenuous satire of white privilege, narrated from the perspective of a delusional thirteen year old boy who fell asleep while gazing up at the goodfellas poster his mom had block mounted for him for his bar mitzvah. I don't mind that most of the characters in this book were almost certainly made-up, I just wish that Frey's imaginary friends had been a little bit more, well, imaginative.
