Nero și Acteea. Sfârșitul unui tiran (în original, Acté) a apărut în 1839 și se află printre primele romane ale lui Dumas. Acțiunea începe în anul 57 d. Hr., în Corint, pe vremea când Grecia își pierduse gloria, devenind provincie romană și găzduind jocurile olimpice; în acest context, frumoasa Acteea îl cunoaște pe tânărul Lucius, despre care crede că este sclav, pentru ca pe parcurs să afle adevărul, și anume că este însuși Nero, împăratul Romei.
În mare parte, Dumas urmărește bine istoria, reliefându-l pe Nero drept prefăcut, crud și în stare de orice pentru a își menține statutul. Asistăm la decăderea tiranului Nero, în zorii creștinismului, dar și la debutul lui Dumas în ceea ce privește romanul istoric.
