About this ebook

Everest - the highest mountain in the world and the ultimate climbing challenge.

In 2006, 11 people died attempting to reach the summit, the most fatalities since 1996. But unlike 1996, 2006 saw no surprise blizzard, only the constant dangers posed by unstable ice, merciless cold, thin air - and human nature.

Nick Heil tells the shocking true stories of David Sharp, a young British solo climber, who was passed by 40 mountaineers as he lay dying on the slopes of the mountain, and Lincoln Hall who was left for dead yet miraculously survived, and asks: what does climbing the world's highest peak really mean for those who take on the challenge? And how far will they go in their single-minded pursuit of the ultimate mountaineering prize?

What a pompous prig. I found myself, instead of being engrossed by the story it was trying to tell, counting the many different dictionary descriptors and the authors attempt at raising himself above others with their use. Such a shame really, an imprtant message lost in the authors self importance and his attempt at making his own writings the value, not those who were the subject. His constant use of the dictionary I found irritating, an ability of his use of spellchecker not his empathy or sadness at the waste of life on margins of life itself. Cold and emotionless, the victims of this tragedy deserved a more humane telling.

A very gripping, moving and unbiased account of events concerning the ascent of Mount Everest, that the average person wouldn't be aware of. Really interesting and readable, and quite shocking at times. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Mount Everest, and all the attempts made to ascend this formidable mountain. I don't know anything about mountaineering but enjoy reading books about this pursuit.
