Viper Spaulding
A fun romance with edge-of-your-seat suspense After a memorable one-night-stand several months ago, Anna and Hawk have no reason to cross paths, except when he investigated a fire that involved her best friend. Still, Anna doesn't think there's anything more there, despite the positive pregnancy test that she's trying to keep quiet as long as she can. That works until she's attacked and her hotel room is set on fire, bringing in Hawk as the fire investigator and her whole family learning her secret while she's in the hospital. Now, Hawk not only has to find out who is targeting Anna and why, but he also has to make sure that she understands he's not going to be a disappearing father like his own was. Even if she doesn't want a relationship, she's going to have to find enough common ground for them to co-parent their baby. I loved the sibling interactions in this book, especially Mary's role and how she steamrolled right over Hawk's objections with Pita. I really enjoyed watching Hawk come out of his loner status, learning to believe in his worth as a member of a larger family. There's tremendous emotional depth to these characters, and I loved every bit of it. The case's resolution brought a bit of a surprise twist, one that worked even without understanding why it took so long for the antagonist to launch an attack. Hawk and Anna's HEA was perfect, with a solid slice of justice and all the happiness tied up in a bow. I could not have loved this book more. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
