‘Literally out-Christies Agatha’ - Janice Hallett, author of The Appeal

Nina de Gramont's The Christie Affair reimagines the unexplained eleven-day disappearance of Agatha Christie that captivated the world.

In 1926, Agatha Christie disappeared for 11 days. Only I know the truth of her disappearance.
I’m no Hercule Poirot.
I’m her husband’s mistress.

Agatha Christie’s world is one of glamorous society parties, country house weekends, and growing literary fame.

Nan O’Dea’s world is something very different. Her attempts to escape a tough London upbringing during the Great War led to a life in Ireland marred by a hidden tragedy. After fighting her way back to England, she’s set her sights on Agatha. Because Agatha Christie has something Nan wants. And it’s not just her husband.

Despite their differences, the two women will become the most unlikely of allies. And during the mysterious eleven days that Agatha goes missing, they will unravel a dark secret that only Nan holds the key to . . .

I've spent the weekend reading this wonderful story of murder, mystery, revenge, love and loss. I really enjoyed it from beginning to end. The disappearance of Agatha Christie is a mystery on it's own but add in a mistress named Nan O'dea and the story rockets to a whole new level. Agatha and Nan are two very different women who want the same man being Agatha's husband Archie. It's emotionally moving and some parts are very sad, especially what Nan and her friends went through at the Convent. It's full of secrets, lost loves, murder and redemption. When all the secrets are revealed at the end and the story reaches it conclusion I could finally take a breath and savour the amazing ending. I loved getting to know all the characters and the mystery surrounding Agatha and where she went was told beautifully. .To be honest I did not want it to end, I could of carried on reading because the plot and characters were phenomenal. This will be a bestseller without a shadow of a doubt. I would like to thank NetGally and PanMacmillan for the ARC, I really appreciate it.

DNF at 34%. This sounded awesome, the story of what happened to Agatha Christie when she disappeared for eleven days, told by her husband's mistress. Well I'm over a third of the way through and so far there's been precious little of Agatha. There's been her husband's scheming mistress Nan, there's been a retired police officer, there's been her husband wandering the streets of London blah, blah, blah but not Agatha. Also, the writing is very odd. I'm sure some poor teenager will be forced to opine on why the book is written from Nan's point of view, even when she's describing her lover's feelings - as if she's the omnipotent narrator instead of one of the characters, but for the reader its very off-putting. I have to keep rereading to see who is taking and who they are talking about. I wasn't enthralled but I kept plodding at it hoping it would get better - because I would love to read a story about where Agatha Christie was during those days (and why), but sadly that doesn't seem to be this book, which is more concerned with tawdry Nan. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

About the author

Nina de Gramont lives with her husband and daughter in coastal North Carolina, where she teaches Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Her interest in writing about Agatha Christie began in 2015 when she first learned about the famous author's eleven-day disappearance. Christie's refusal to ever speak about this episode particularly intrigued Nina, who loves the fact that someone who unravelled mysteries for a living managed to keep her own intact. The Christie Affair is her fourth novel.
