In this holy land of Saints, Janabai has got a recognition. Her work is great in all aspects. And when we consider the situation of the society and the levels that the society was based upon and of course the deprivation of the women, her work receives great credentials. Jana was born to Dama and Kurund, the untouchables and needless to say a very poor couple, from Gangakhed, a small village in Marathwade. She was conceived after a wait for many years and lost her mother at a very young age. Her father left her with an elderly couple at Pandharpur. Their son Namdeo, the renowned saint protected her right from their childhood. She always called herself as humble servant’, but was more like a disciple to him. Jana emerged as a saint after lot of struggle and hardship. She did not do it on purpose. But as she heard the teachings Namdeo was receiving, as she observed him writing and reading, she learnt a lot. She started expressing her feelings towards Lord Vitthala, compiling them in Abhangas. She had a craving deep within. She was pulled towards Lord Vitthala with an unknown force. She found HIM to be her constant companion. She was tasted severely for her devotion and then accepted by the Lord. She found solace at his feet when the time was right.

जनीनं हरिश्चंद्र आख्यानाचा आणि कीर्तनाचा समारोप केला. सगळी इतकी भारावून गेली होती की, कीर्तन संपल्यावर विठूनामाचा गजर करण्याचं भानही कुणाला राहिलं नव्हतं. जनीच्या चेहNयावरचे बधिर भाव बघून नामदेवाला भडभडून आलं, तर ज्ञानेश्वर गहिवरले. त्या दोघांना समोर बघून जनी लहानाहूनही लहान झाली. लटपटत्या पावलानं थरथरत उभी असलेली जनी खाली कोसळणार तोच ज्ञानेश्वर-नामदेवांनी तिला सावरलं. पोटाशी धरलं. प्रेमभरानं तिच्या पाठीवर थोपटून तिला सामोरी केली. आणि म्हणाले ‘‘धन्य ऽऽ! धन्य हो जनाबाई तुम्ही! जनाबाई, तुम्ही एक स्त्री, त्यातही शूद्र; पण इतकी अर्थपूर्ण आणि भावगर्भ रचना तुम्ही करू शकता हा या युगातला चमत्कार मानावा लागेल. तुमचा प्रत्येक हुंकार म्हणजे ओंकार आहे. ओंकार ही त्या ईश्वराची मोहोर आहे. देवाची स्वाक्षरी आहे. आणि जनाबाई, तुम्ही त्या ‘ओंकाराची रेख’ आहात, ओंकाराची रेख!’’ हे दृश्य पाहण्यासाठी शांत झालेला वारा ‘ओंकाराची रेख’ या नावाची स्पंदनं घेऊन पुन्हा वाहायला लागला. त्या वाNयानं ती स्पंदनं चंद्रभागेच्या वाळवंटात विखरून टाकली. वाळवंटाचा कणन्कण थरारला. तिथून ती स्पंदनं चंद्रभागेच्या पाण्यावर पसरली. चंद्रभागेचे पाणी रोमांचले. . सगळे गर्भागार उजळून निघाले. त्याचा प्रकाश विठूच्या सावळ्या मुखावर पडला. त्याच्या आनंदाला तर पारावार राहिला नाही. डोळ्यांतून पाण्याच्या धारा लागल्या. रात्रीनं या सगळ्या दृश्याला मानवंदना देत आपला अंधार आवरता घेतला. काकड आरती करायला आलेल्या सदा गुरवाला मात्र दोन गोष्टींचा अर्थ लागला नाही. एक म्हणजे विठ्ठलाच्या दगडी मूर्तीच्या डोळ्यांतून पाणी का वाहत होतं आणि दुसरी म्हणजे गर्भागारात नेहमीच्या ‘विठ्ठल विठ्ठल’ या ध्वनिगुंजनाऐवजी ‘ओंकाराची रेख’, ‘ओंकाराची रेख’ असा काहीतरी ध्वनी कसा घुमत होता याचा!
