This publication includes the translation of the Plautus’ Mercator, with an introduction and footnotes. In the introduction, the most relevant elements of the play are analyzed aiming at its theoretical contextualization: the question of structure, the father/son rivalry as the central theme of the comedy; the characters; the language and the style; the comic; and the problematic chronology of the play. The study is complemented with an actualized bibliography.

Aires Pereira do Couto é professor catedrático do Centro Regional de Viseu da Universidade Católica Portuguesa e investigador do Centro de Estudos Clássicos e Humanísticos do Instituto de Estudos Clássicos da Universidade de Coimbra. No âmbito da sua atividade de docente e investigador, tem privilegiado os estudos de língua e literatura latina – sobretudo comédia – e do humanismo quinhentista português. É autor de várias traduções de Plauto e de Terêncio.
