Datada hacia el año 408 a.C., “Orestes” es una de las últimas tragedias de Eurípides. Orestes, tras haber matado a su madre Clitemnestra, estaba en Argos y seguía siendo perseguido por las Erinias, por lo que se encontraba muy enfermo y era cuidado por su hermana Electra. En el juicio por el asesinato, los habitantes de Argos están a punto de emitir sus votos. A partir de aquí se plantea un debate sobre si el matricidio ordenado por Apolo y cometido por Orestes es o no justo, y si éste podría haber actuado de diferente modo.
