About this ebook

A soldier who despises women and a woman who despises soldiers must depend on each other to survive.

Scarred in a duel over a feckless female, Gavin Lawrence leaves America to take up his new duty as Marquess of Effingham, vowing never to care about others again. But he does care about protecting his crumbling new home—the secret passages apparently conceal an intruder he’s determined to root out.

Dillian Whitnell guards her injured cousin in isolated Arinmede manor after an attempt on both their lives. Having followed her father’s troops for years, Dillian is adept at camouflage. She just hadn’t expected the stubborn new marquess to refuse to believe in ghosts. Her game of hide-and-seek game taunts his irritation into intrigue, and intrigue into a forbidden passion, until Gavin realizes the exceedingly annoying but courageous young woman he chases is in terrible danger.

Once more, the marquess is faced with the prospect of a fight for his life over a woman—unless Dillian leaves him and all she loves behind.

This story has everything I consider a good book should have - a range of interesting characters, a good problem (plus side stories), suspense, humour and a bit of romance. I did, however, have a bit of trouble keeping up with all the different characters because there were so many.

Really liked this story. Well written, great characters, plot twists were good, and the sex was there in a moderate, classy way. Handled very nicely. Looking forward to reading more about Michael and Blanche in the English Heiress and of Neville in The Irish Dutchess.

Was a good read, good plot and characters. Only that the main lady, Dillian was a bit too defiant, she was starting to look reckless and stupid. I understand that it was meant to show an independent woman, but when independence leads to stupid actions it negates the image, and she becomes annoying...and it was a bit long, not by the number of pages but too much back and forth I guess? Instead of just getting to the point?
