Longfellow wrote the poem at the time of the Civil War. He hoped that his story of an ordinary citizen who comes to the aid of his country would stir patriotic feelings and support for the Union. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was one of nineteen-century America's most popular poets. Among his finest poems are "The Song of Hiawatha," "The Courtship of Miles Standish."
