Les nouveaux locataires de la propriété arrivent, il s'agit de l'amiral Croft et de sa femme, dont le frère, le Capitaine Wentworth, a été fiancé il y a quelques années avec Anna. Celle-ci n'avait pas donné suite à cette liaison, suivant l'avis de son amie, Lady Russell, qui trouvait le capitaine d'un rang inférieur, indigne d'Anna.
