About the author

Philippa Velija is Head of Programme for Sport Development & Education at York St John University, UK. She applies sociological theories to understanding sport, and in particular she considers gender relations in sport. She has previously published on women's cricket, women and the martial arts and female jockeys. Philippa's research draws on figurational sociology to develop a long term sociological perspective on power relations in women's involvement in sport.
