Una incredibile cavalcata tra gli Universi paralleli per Andrea Venier, insegnante veneziano di liceo che, chiamato negli USA come consulente per un film fantastorico sulla (mancata) partecipazione di Garibaldi alla Guerra Civile, al ritorno si trova scaraventato in una realtà in cui la sua amata Venezia, ovvero Venedig, è un Land della Repubblica Federale Austriaca. Cosa è successo? La risposta è in America, dove il Sud aristocratico e schiavista ha vinto la Guerra Civile. C'è una sola possibilità di ripristinare il corretto corso della Storia, e Andrea vi si impegna con tutto se stesso, per trovarsi però proiettato, in Ritorno a Gettysburg, in un incubo ancora peggiore, in cui a Venezia e in tutta Europa sono le bandiere con la svastica a dominare, perché un nuovo cataclisma temporale ha mantenuto l'America neutrale nell'ultimo conflitto, lasciando via libera alle armate hitleriane nel vecchio Continente.
