अमेरिका में सबसे अधिक लोकप्रिय परिधान ब्लू जींस के प्रणेता लेवी स्ट्रॉस का जन्म 26 फरवरी; 1829 को जर्मनी के फ्रंकोनियन क्षेत्र के बूटेनहेइम (बावरिया) में पवित्र रोमन साम्राज्य में पहली सहस्राब्दी के अंत से मौजूद विशिष्ट समुदाय अशेनाजी यहूदी परिवार में हुआ था। अपने पिता की मृत्यु के दो साल बाद 18 वर्ष की उम्र में स्ट्रॉस अपनी माँ व दो बहनों के साथ अमेरिका के पूर्व समुद्र-तटीय क्षेत्र न्यूयॉर्क सिटी में अपने भाई के साथ रहने के लिए आ गया था; जिसने ‘स्ट्रॉस ब्रदर एंड कंपनी’ नाम से ड्राई गुड्स यानी सूखे माल (धागा; कपड़ा; पहनावा व संबंधित वस्तुओं) का थोक कारोबार शुरू किया था। बड़े भाई के साथ लगन व मेहनत से काम करते हुए युवा स्ट्रॉस ने तेजी से कारोबार के गुर सीखने शुरू कर दिए थे और तीन साल बाद सन् 1850 में वह अपने समुदाय के लोगों व ग्राहकों के बीच ‘लेवी’ के नाम से लोकप्रिय हो गया था।
