The available paperwork related to Rajarshee Shahu Maharaj’s social work include many of his letters. Some of them are written by him. They are very rare and in original form. The correspondence between him and Ambedkar genuinely helps to understand the former style and social and political aspects. The letters allow us to understand the caring and sharing that these two great men had. Shahu Maharaj calls Dr. Ambedkar as ‘Lokmanya Ambedkar’ in one of his letters. Dr. Ambedkar on the other hand calls him ‘The Pillar of Social Democracy in India.’
राजर्षी शाहू छत्रपतींच्या समाजक्रांतीच्या बहुआयामी कार्यावर प्रकाश टाकणाऱ्या कागदपत्रांच्या संग्रहात अनेक महत्त्वाच्या पत्रव्यवहारांचा समावेश आहे. त्यात खुद्द शाहू छत्रपतींनी इतरांस लिहिलेली तसेच इतरांनी महाराजांना लिहिलेली अशी अनेक दुर्मीळ पत्रे समाविष्ट झालेली आहेत. विशेषत: यामधील शाहू-आंबेडकर पत्रव्यवहार तत्कालीन, सामाजिक व राजकीय चळवळींवर प्रकाश टाकणारा आहे. या उभय महापुरुषांत परस्परांविषयी किती जिव्हाळा होता, याचेही दर्शन ही पत्रे घडवितात. याच पत्रव्यवहारांत, शाहू छत्रपतींनी डॉ. बाबासाहेबांना ‘लोकमान्य आंबेडकर’ असे संबोधिले आहे; तर बाबासाहेबांनी छत्रपतींचे वर्णन करताना त्यांना ‘The Pillar of Social Democracy in India’ (भारतातील सामाजिक लोकशाहीचे आधारस्तंभ) असे म्हटले आहे.
