Das Lehrbuch bietet einen vertieften Überblick über die Geschichte und Politik Afrikas vom atlantischen Sklavenhandel, über die Phasen von Kolonialismus und Dekolonisation bis zu den Entwicklungsproblemen der Gegenwart. Dabei werden diverse Entwicklungstheorien zur Erklärung von erfolgreichen und fehlgeschlagenen Entwicklungspfaden einzelner Länder nach 1960 herangezogen. Thematische Schwerpunkte sind Europas koloniales Erbe, Staatsbildung und Staatszerfall, Demokratisierung, Fluch der Rohstoffe, Bevölkerungswachstum, Hunger und Armut, ethnische Konflikte sowie die Rollen der Weltbank, EU und China als externe Akteure in Afrika.
