This is a great overview for you to know what else to look into. Syracuse was one of the last to be taken by the Romans and they tried desperately over a long period of time to do so with great loss. Arrows Would Rain from seemingly nowhere automatically and from much longer ranges than ever experienced before and if their ships did get near the walls, giant cranes with swing around and grab the front of the boat lifting it out of the water and smashing them like toys. Archimedes was genius incarnate.
