During 1988 Anita Bunn left South Africa for America to see how other people lived. It would be for 36 months, she told her mother. She returned 8 years later with her son and settled into a small cottage on a big farm in the middle of the Stellenbosch vineyards. With great gusto, she started a new chapter in her life, falling face first into gardening, animal husbandry, compost, art and raising a son solo with often hilarious results. Anita penned these tails in a local newspaper, writing passionately about self-sustainability, her relationship with her animals and soil which she lovingly tendered throughout her life. Recipes of traditional and not so traditional South African delicacies were thrown in with abandonment. Her articles overflowed with the smells and rhythms of her beloved South Africa. These articles became the backbone of her memoirs. Her son returned to his birthplace, America and the circle was completed.

Ramblings of a life in Africa evokes the spirit of an independent woman determined to live life to its fullest extent, regardless. It is a candid tale of things that befall an ordinary life. Her tales are captured in her unique style with an easy narrative and colourful illustrations burst from the pages, each one a story on their own.

growing food for her table, her fiercely-independent son, and

all the adventures that occur along the way. Words and images

tumble from her pen and vivid imagination, and the accompanying

illustrations are captivating, whimsical and evocative of our

deeper relationships with the earth and all her inhabitants, and

our elemental and primal natures.
