कोई भी व्यक्ति जन्म से नहीं बल्कि कर्म से महान् बनता है। ऐसे ही एक महान् कर्मयोगी थे महात्मा गाँधी। उनका नमा मोहनदास करमचंद गाँधी था, परंतु कार्यों की श्रेष्ठता के कारण लोग उन्हें 'महात्मा गाँधी' कहते थे। उनका जम्म 2 अक्टूबर, 1869 को राजकोट,काठियावाड़ गुजरात प्रदेश के पोरबंदर नामक स्थान पर हुआ थाँ इनके पिता श्री करमचंद गाँधी राजकोट में दीवान थे। वे अत्यंत ईमानदार और सरल स्वभाव के व्यक्ति थे। इनकी माता श्रीमति पुतलीबाई धार्मिक विचारों की सुशील महिला थीं। पूजा—पाठ किए बिना वे भोजन तक नहीं करती थी। धर्मपरायण माता—पिता के संस्कारों का प्रभाव बेटे पर भी पड़ा। गाँधीजी की प्रांरभिक शिक्षा राजकोट मे हुई। वे समय पर स्कूल जाते और छुट्टी होने पर सीधा घर आ जाते थे। बचपन में वे बड़े ही संकोची स्वभाव के थे। बाहर वर्ष अल्पायु में ही गांधीजी का विवाह कस्तूरबा नाम की कन्या से कर दिया गया।
