The plot of the book, Recha, is innocuous. Whether influenced by the times or out of sincere antisemitism, Gaskell portrays Jews as religious fanatics and evil moneylenders. Although usury was found to be practiced by jews in earlier times, by the eighteenth century laws from the rabbinate outlawed such practices.
