About the author
Rene Descartes (1596-1650) was born in La Haye (now renamed Descartes) before moving to Anjou and Poitiers for his education. He moved to Paris in 1619 into the scientific circle of Marin Mersenne, before publishing his essays 'Discourse on Method' from Holland. After threats to his safety on publication he accepted an invitation to join the court of the Queen of Sweden, but died shortly after arriving in Stockholm.
