Den Rahmen für das Verständnis des Richter-Buchs bilden die beiden ersten Teile der Hebräischen Bibel: Tora und Propheten. Diese werden als autoritative Texte des antiken Judentums gelesen, für deren Endgestalt die Schriftgelehrten und Lehrer der Schule des Zweiten Tempels verantwortlich sind. Dabei geht Redaktionsgeschichte nahtlos in Kanongeschichte über. Entstehungsgeschichtliche Rekonstruktionen werden nur dann vorgenommen, wenn sie dem Verständnis des jetzt vorliegenden Textes dienen. Ernst Axel Knaufs Übersetzung gibt erstmals die Abschnittsgliederung des Aleppo-Kodex, des ältesten erhaltenen Manuskripts der Hebräischen Bibel, wieder.
