About this ebook

Private investigators Joe Pike and Elvis Cole get double-crossed in this twisty, gripping New York Times bestseller that will have readers on the edge of their seats.

When gangbangers shake down the modest owner of a Los Angeles eatery, Joe Pike intervenes. For all intents and purposes, Pike saved Wilson Smith's life. But for reasons of their own, Smith and his lovely niece, Dru, are curiously resentful. It's only when Pike's feelings for the woman deepen that he and his partner, Elvis Cole, discover that Dru and her uncle are not at all who they seem, and everything Pike has learned about them is a lie. But it's much more than a deception. It's a trap. And with every new twist it's proving to be a killer.

Joe Pike is at a gas station when he sees two men swagger into a sandwich shop across the street. The body language of the two men tells Joe that they are out to do something malicious. Not being one to stand by when someone is being taken advantage of, Joe checks it out. When he enters the store, the men have the owner on the ground and are administering a beating to him. Joe takes care of one of the gangsters and the other runs away. The police arrest the one gang banger that Joe dispatched and Joe thinks things have been settled. However, later that night, someone throws a can of paint through the store window. Joe learns from the owner's niece, Dru Rayne, that the men are attempting to shake down her uncle for protection money. Joe offers to help and goes to the gang leader where he gets the man's promise to stay away from the store. Again, the next night, the store is trashed. Someone leaves a sign painted on the wall, "I am here." With that, Dru and her uncle disappear. The story continues at a fast pace. Violence and suspense mount as Joe, the authorities and others look for Dru and her uncle. There are plot twists and surprises that enhance the story as it unfolds. I found myself totally drawn to this story of heroism and courage on Joe's part. I now know what the meaning of a white knuckle story is. Highly recommended.
