Mai 1889 in Waikiki vollendet wurde und im selben Jahr bei Cassell in London erschien. Die Übertragung ins Deutsche brachte Velhagen 1894 in Bielefeld unter dem Titel "Der Erbe von Ballantrae" heraus.Stevenson schildert in seinem mit Horrorelementen sparsam ausgeschmückten Familienroman den Kampf der verfeindeten adeligen schottischen Brüder James und Henry in der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Der Autor balanciere auf der Grenzlinie zwischen Realismus und Romanze.
