Apparso nel 1886, "La freccia Nera" è un romanzo ambientato durante la Guerra delle Due rose, il conflitto tra le fazioni degli York e dei Lancaster che dilaniò l’Inghilterra nella seconda metà del Quattrocento. Protagonisti della vicenda sono il giovane Dick Shelton, allevato dal bieco Daniel Brackley – il classico signorotto di campagna che per amore dei soldi schiaccia tutti gli altri in miseria –, e Joanna Sedley. I due si incontrano casualmente nella foresta: Dick soccorre un altro ragazzo, che in realtà è Joanna travestita, e insieme assistono, non visti, a un incontro segreto dei banditi della Freccia Nera, nemici giurati di Brackley, i quali, per vendicare i torti subiti, colpiscono i cattivi di turno con le loro precisissime frecce nere: la loro firma. Quando Dick scopre che il mandante dell’assassinio di suo padre è proprio il padrino Brackley, decide di schierarsi a fianco dei banditi, sino al lieto fine conclusivo.
