Troppo a lungo interpretato semplicisticamente come una lettura d'evasione per ragazzi, Kim è, secondo il giudizio di Edmund Wilson, «un libro incantevole, nel quale, forse più che in ogni altro, Kipling lasciò seguire liberamente alla sua fantasia le proprie memorie ed esplorazioni e che, di conseguenza, è il più complesso e intenso di ogni altro suo romanzo».
