not worth the price. the first book's main char's "transformation" is incredibly poor character development at constant odds with itself in trying to come up with ways to obfuscate how to get around its explicit claims of indifference. the second book doesn't begin any better with spoon-feeding the character's apathy yet again coming up with a way to not let it get in the way of the plot. There's more that deserves the 1 star, but overall the sum complaint is that this feels like middle-school or high-school writing quality at best.

Fun series BUT! The number of times the author twists logic really hurts the further enjoyment to be had. They are supposed to be in an anti-magic environment (AME) but they use magic basically because the author says it's ok! C'mon man! The crazy part is Hajime is supposedly three times stronger than Shea but never acts like it while actually fighting. Give the guns to everyone especially within Hajime's party! Back to AME in gorge give a gun to Yue, and let Hajime and Shea be bashers! Still a four star read! The addition of a third wheel, Shea, was really really fun! Having a prophetess could be a major plus later too but she clearly has quirks just like Hajime and Yue. Author definitely gets reader pulling for the new three person team. We finally see more of the other "heroes" too not just the 4 person team with extras! Two volumes in and he hasn't taught neither Yue nor Shea how to shoot much less give them a gun so he clearly doesn't love them that much. It's a misogynist!

It's okay, but a fair number of things come out of nowhere, and I feel like it tries too hard to be edgy rather than convincing.
