स्वतंत्र भारत के प्रथम प्रधानमंत्री एवं आधुनिक भारत के निर्माता पं. जवाहर लाल नेहरू का जन्म 14 नवंबर; 1889 को इलाहाबाद के मीरगंज नामक स्थान पर हुआ था। इनके पिता का नाम पं. मोतीलाल नेहरू और माता का नाम श्रीमती स्वरूपरानी था। ये कश्मीरी ब्राह्मण थे।
पं. मोतीलाल नेहरू के पिता और जवाहर लाल के दादा पं. गंगाधर नेहरू दिल्ली शहर के कोतवाल रहे थे। सन् 1857 के विद्रोह के समय इनकी लगभग सारी संपत्ति नष्ट हो गई थी। इसी कारण अन्य शरणार्थियों के साथ नेहरू परिवार भी दिल्ली छोड़कर आगरा में बस गया था। सन् 1886 में पं. मोतीलाल नेहरू सपरिवार आगरा से आकर इलाहाबाद में बस गए। यहीं जवाहर लाल का जन्म हुआ।
