About this ebook

When a young war widow meets an enemy prisoner of war she faces an impossible choice. In the shadow of war-torn Europe loyalties are tested to the limit.

England 1944. War widow Clare Chapman is desolate with grief. So when the first German prisoners of war arrive in the village she is horrified, hating them all. Then one of them saves a young child’s life and she is forced to reconsider.

German soldier Max Peterson is desperate for news. For almost two years he’s heard nothing from his family in Berlin and he wants only to return to search for them. But when a chance meeting with an English widow stirs feelings he thought he had long forgotten, he can no longer avoid the likely truth. So begins an illicit connection.

Their secret doesn’t last. Shunned by family and friends for illegal fraternisation with the enemy, Clare risks losing all she has. Then long held secrets are brought to light and she must make a devastating choice.

Out of the Ashes is an unforgettable Historical Fiction novel set in World War II. If you like gripping and emotional page-turners, you’ll love the latest novel from British author Samantha Grosser.

The Last Goodbye - A beautiful love story between a young British woman and a young American airman and the sacrifice she makes for love. Set in both January, 1944, during WWII, and in 2014, a diary connects a clueless young woman and the older woman that left the younger her home and worldly possessions. Couple of places could be tearjerkers, but the story is well written with plenty of emotions, cruelty and love. Source: BookSirens. 5* Out of the Ashes - A forbidden romance between an English schoolteacher and a German POW set in England during 1944 - 1946. While Clare and Max are the main romantic characters, I think war decimated Berlin has a greater romance hidden in its rubble. Only spoiler given. With WWII as the backdrop, I enjoyed the story unfolding with love, hate, betrayal, suffering and hope through out the pages. Well written and well thought out, do not expect a tear-jerker, there are emotions but the horrors of WWII are not in your face. 5*

Max, a German prisoner of war is sent to an English farm to work. The people there hate all of them. One day he saves one of their children from drowning. Clare, a teacher, whose husband had died in the war, sees him in a different light, and with time, they grow to love each other but there is a law that does not allow her to fraternize with the enemy. I enjoyed this story.

Samantha Grosser is a very British author who doesn’t function without tea. Having spent many years teaching English in Asia and Australia, she has made a permanent home in Sydney, Australia, where she now lives with her husband, son, and a very small dog called Livvy. She is the author of wartime dramas Another Time and Place,The Officer’s Affair, and Out of the Ashes, and the historical fantasy series Web of Witches. When she isn’t writing or reading (which isn’t often) you can find her either doing yoga, going for long walks, or watching old movies.
