 Indian agriculture has witnessed spectacular advances in agricultural production in the last few decades. This was possible through green revolution in mid 60s leading to the country’s remarkable achievement in food grains and edible oil production. Seed has always been regarded as the most vital, basic and critical input in agriculture. It is interesting to note that today seed demand of only 10% farmers is met. Efforts are needed to provide good quality certify seeds to farmers. In recent years the awareness for seed health has increased among the growers, traders, and consumers. In post-GATT era and with emergence of WTO, seed health has assumed the global concern. Infection of seed borne pathogens results into seed rots, seedling decay, pre and post emergence mortality, distortion, discoloration, reduced seed size and shrivelledness of seeds. Their study and identification is primarily required to achieve satisfactory control. The book will be of great help to students, researchers, and people engaged in seed production activities. In this book, information about different seed borne diseases is presented in 20 chapters. There is an urgent need to find out effective, alternative methods of diseases control, which are less harmful to human beings and environment. There are chapters dealing with botanical pesticides and quarantine regulations. A chapter describes molecular aspects involved in seed borne diseases. The contents are divided into two parts (I) Seed borne diseases and (II) Wilt and foliar diseases and their control methods. Ecofriendly measures to control seed borne diseases are dealt in detail.
  The book provides comprehensive and integrated information on management of seed health written by experts in the field. It will be especially useful for students and young people involved in seed testing, seed industry as well as in teaching. Besides Agriculture Universities the book will be useful for all others offering courses related to Phytopathology and Seed Technology.

作者简介

Arun Arya

Dr. Arun Arya, Professor of Botany and Co-ordinator, Seed Technology Programme in The M.S. University of Baroda. He is a Botanist, Phytopathologist, Philatelist & popular Science writer. He obtained his Doctorate from University of Allahabad in 1983. Dr. Arya started his teaching career as lecture in Microbiology at Gurukul Kangri University, Hardwar in 1985. With the start of Seed Technology programme he was made co-ordinator in 2001. Dr. Arya is a recipient of Young Scientist award of DST, New Delhi in 1986. He has worked as a senior research fellow and post doctoral research fellow of CSIR, New Delhi. He has published more than 100 research papers and 7 books. He has reported three new species of Phomopsis and several new fruit rot diseases. For the first time different fungi have been reported by his research group from objects like paper, cloth and Egyptian mummy kept in Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery. Ecofriendly plant parts obtained from rhizome, leaf and flower extracts were used to control different fungal pathogens. He has presented his research findings in XV International Botanical Congress at Yokohama in Japan in 1993 and 12th World Forestry Congress in Qubec City Canada in 2003. He had an honour to co-chair a session on Eco-regions in this International Congress.


Cecilia Monaco

Dr. Cecilia Monaco was borne on 6th Nov 1961 in Esquel, Argentina. She did her M.Sc. in Plant Protection from National University of La Plata. She got her Ph.D. in Natural Sciences (Ecology) in December 2002. She has 18 years of teaching and research experience in issues related to Plant Pathology and Biological control of Plant diseases. Presently she is Assistant Professor, course of Phytopathology, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry National University of La Plata, Argentina. She has acquired skills within specialization areas for problem analysis and diagnosis, design and execution of research and development experimental programs and integration in multidisciplinary work teams. She has extensively worked on biological control of plant diseases. She has discovered new methods to control foliar pathogens like Helminthosporium and Bipolaris. Her work on phyllosphere mycoflora is well recognized throughout the world. She is course director on biological control of Soil-borne Plant pathogens. She has published more than 25 research papers in journals of well repute. She is well versed with English and Spanish. She was awarded fellowship of Comision de Investigaciones Cientificas de la Provincia de Buenos Aries, Argentina During 1988-1990 and University of Siena ( Italy) in 1990-1991.
