In a West Virginia girls camp in July 1963, a group of children experience an unexpected rite of passage. Jayne Anne Phillips is the author of Black Tickets and Fast Lanes, two widely anthologized collections of stories, and Machine Dreams, a novel nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her work has been translated into fourteen languages. She is a recipient of the Sue Kaufman Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in fiction.
