EXCERPT.

“There was a commotion outside of the room, the door opened and the therapist and the nurse were exchanging views. She was saying something about it having happened too many times. Schmitt dismissed her and came into the room, his discontented expression was not aimed at her but toward the chauffeur.

“Mini bar?” He said quietly, the uniformed man nodded his hands hanging in front of him, his fists clenched. Schmitt flicked his head towards the door behind him and the dismissed man walked past him and was gone

Natalie was a little more tipsy than she’d first thought, the effects of the alcohol still creeping up on her.

“I’m ever so sorry.” She said, even though the apology was sincere it came out in a sort of sing-song jovial way that sounded facetious.

He didn’t notice or chose to ignore it either way it didn’t really matter, apparently he held the chauffeur responsible for leaving the bar in the limo unlocked. She would have to stay the night in an annex since she was in no fit state to sign all the documentation.

“I’ll sign, it’s fine.” She’d protested but he was adamant, he explained that she could not be considered compos mentis and if anything were to go wrong it would be catastrophic.

“What could go wrong!” She asked really quite alarmed all of a sudden. He shook his head and turned to the door, his patience seemingly quite thin.

She shuffled along behind him and tried to smile in the direction of the reception nurse but it didn’t breach the divide, the glare back at her was full of judgement. She snapped her head around and followed him through the old building, she tried to get glimpses into open doors and get some sort of feeling of the spaces beyond but he walked quickly.

Although the main building felt a little like an old Victorian hospital, which she was sure it was, the annex was the complete opposite, a modern holiday chalet feel was what she got from the room she was shown to.

“You can stay in your own clothes for this evening, there will be some night clothes in the bedroom.” He said it to her, put a key on the side and left.

She felt angry but also a bit ashamed of herself too.

She flopped down on the couch and looked around, it was well appointed a large open plan kitchen lounge and dinner, two glass panels at right angles to each other constituted two complete sides of the building, on closer inspection they were actually bi-fold doors and when she pulled both sets back the whole corner of the building was open, she went outside into a wooded area and when she turned back she could see more clearly that her apartment was part of a block with three other apartments all facing away from each other.

Back inside she was about to sit and put her feet up and browse the TV when there was a knock at the door.

When she answered the nurse who’d been unimpressed with her at the front of the clinic, she thought that things were going to get awkward or worse but the nurse spoke as if nothing had happened. She invited herself in and placed a large bag on the counter.

“Right let's get you signed up shall we.” She chirped, pulling out a clipboard and a pen.

“I thought the doctor said…” Natalie began to protest but the nurse cut her off with a dismissive wave and carried on as if all were fine.

“Well you can’t get into any trouble out here in the annexe so it’ll be fine.” She put the clipboard down.<br>

If you could initial each page and sign the last one.”

Natalie picked up the board and began to read, the nurse went to the windows and drew in a breath of fresh air.

Natalie wasn’t so much reading the contract as scanning it, she just wanted to give the impression that she was being vigilant she didn’t want them to think she was stupid.

The word permission was used a lot and on the third and final page was a comment box, above the box it said ‘please make a note of any thing that you care to add.” She scribbled. ``Do everything and anything to fix me please.” Then she signed jovially, rocking her head as she did.

The nurse came back over and took the signed documents and went into her bag, she pulled out a bottle of pills, she recognised the sleeping pills as the ones she’d been taking.

“Are you sure about this?” She couldn’t get her head around the fact that he’d been so keen on her not doing anything tonight.

The nurse smiled, tapped a couple of pills out into the palm of her hand and produced a bottle of water from the bag.

Natalie decided they must know what they were doing. Perhaps they just wanted her to get a good night's rest.
