About this eBook

An epic account of a boy born into a struggle for survival on the harsh and unforgiving American frontier from the greatest Western writer of the century.

On the eve of the Civil War, Kirby Jensen is the youngest of three children living on a hardscrabble ranch in Southwestern Missouri. But in 1861, shots are fired in Charleston harbor, and Kirby’s father and brother go to war. Smoke Jensen: The Beginning follows the Jensen clan during these volatile years, from Civil War battles to border state raids to the kind of frontier justice achieved only by bullets and blood.

William W. Johnstone chronicles the early years of Kirby Jensen—soon to be nicknamed Smoke—as he journeys from boyhood innocence into a manhood shaped by violence and a young man’s thirst for justice. Filled with actual historical events and legendary characters, the story of Smoke Jensen’s early years is a powerful, brutal and amazing American saga—the crowning achievement of America’s most popular living Western writer.

I was never interested in reading books, until I got locked up lol. My dad got me Desolation Creek, book five in this series, and that was the first time in many years since I read a book front to back. So I asked him if he could order the whole series for me, he did and I'm very grateful for him and William W. Johnstone for making my hard times easier.

Somebody already expressed what I experienced with this book. Flew 10 hours from JFK to Honolulu and read in 5.5 hrs. Just couldn't put it down. Phenomenal! I bought the second book as soon as I landed.

This is one of those books you just cannot put down until you turn the last page. I finally found out how 'Smoke' got his name. His name, Kirby, is a common southern boys name here in the South. This is a very riveting book that will keep you turning page after page until that last one. You will promise yourself to reread it again & again. GREAT BOOK!!!!!!

About the author

William W. Johnstone is the #1 bestselling Western writer in America and the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of hundreds of books, with over 50 million copies sold. Born in southern Missouri, he was raised with strong moral and family values by his minister father and tutored by his schoolteacher mother. After-school hours were often spent retyping manuscripts or researching his massive American Western History library as well as the more modern wars and conflicts. J.A. worked hard and learned, later going on to become the co-author of William W. Johnstone’s many bestselling westerns and thrillers. J. A. Johnstone lives on a ranch in Tennessee.
