Dal banditismo degli anni Venti, alla cruenta invasione giapponese degli anni Trenta e Quaranta, fino al periodo che precedette la Rivoluzione culturale, Sorgo rosso racconta le avventure e gli amori del bandito Yu Zhan'ao e della sua famiglia, in un affresco che ritrae un intero popolo, tutto un Paese. Un Paese dalle campagne brulicanti di anime sperdute - contadini, soldati, monaci buddisti, maghi taoisti - in cui «un vento maschio spazza una terra femmina» e il sangue versato è «morbido e liscio come piume d'uccelli».
