This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. "Sorochinskaya Fair" is a story by Gogol set in the writer's native village of Velikiye Sorochintsy, Mirgorod district, Poltava region. This is a comedic short story that portrays rustic life, love, and the lively atmosphere of the Sorochintsy Fair. Gogol's narrative, with its eccentric characters and humorous incidents, paints a vivid picture of Ukrainian rural life. It was originally published in the collection "Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka", the author's first book. In the story, Gogol made extensive use of motifs from Little Russian folklore and Ukrainian literature.
