Nadchodzą. Findiri – dziki, śmiercionośny gatunek, stworzony do walki z Rojem – wyruszyli na łowy. Jednak nie polują już na Rój. Zwrócili się przeciw ludziom. A dokładniej – szukają swojego stwórcy, kapitana Timothy’ego Grangera. Chcą go zniszczyć.
Nie jesteśmy jednak sami. Wiele innych ras obcych, którzy przez tysiąclecia ukrywali się przed Rojem, teraz także poszukuje Ziemi. Chcą poznać bohatera ze swoich legend, tego, który ich chronił – istotę imieniem Granger. Kiedy Ziemia znajduje się na rozdrożu, Granger, admirał Proctor i załoga „Niepodległości” ścigają się z czasem. Muszą odkryć tajemnicę Findiri, zanim upadną światy zasiedlone przez ludzi i inne gatunki rozumne. Jednak życiu w Galaktyce nie zostało wiele czasu, a odliczanie już się zaczęło.
